"If you are stressed about things going on in your life, and you are unable to digest those issues, then those emotions are going to get stuck in your tissues... literally".
Even in our supposedly 'oh-so advanced' 21st century modern society, it is still a relatively little-known fact that all of our stress and unresolved hurts are registered and stored in our organs, tissues and cells.
Most people have no idea how ongoing dis-ease eventually turns into disease, and that we literally make ourselves 'sick to the stomach with worry' or harm our liver by feeling 'livid with anger'.
But after exploring and studying this subject for the past 30 years, there is not one shred of doubt in my mind that much (if not most) illness is the result of ongoing unresolved stress and emotional trauma.
I have worked with too many chronically sick and unhappy clients (ME, CFS, fibromyalgia, IBS, you name it...) and seen too many marvellous recoveries by people, who rather than doing anything physical to get well, just changed their mental and emotional state, to doubt this is true.
So why is that so many people are still unaware of the self-healing abilities of the body, and the power of emotions to create (and dis-create) dis-ease?
Well, there are several factors:
'You don't know what you don't know'.
Many people, including myself, grow up only knowing of going to a doctor for help.
Now, I am in no way diminishing the conventional medical system - it does marvellous work. However, the conventional medical system is just one of many options for addressing health problems.
As I was to discover through my own very long journey back to health from chronic illness, where I personally tried and tested over 250 therapies, there are many more options than just seeing a doctor.
The problem with the conventional medical system up until now is that it has focused predominantly on looking for a physical cause to a physical problem, more or less ignoring the fact that a human being is much more than just a physical body. We have a body, mind, emotions, life force energy (Qi) and Spirit - and all these parts of ourselves must be taken into account for holistic healing.
Most people have not been educated to understand the many health options which are available right now if one wishes to look further afield beyond medication or surgery.
Also, the public health system and health insurance companies have been predominantly focused on conventional western medicine, which means the 'masses' are inadvertently educated into a narrow approach of what is available.
So if natural health is not taught in schools, or promoted in the public health system, then how are the 'masses' meant to hear about it?
Well, I believe in the future it will be common knowledge, but there is work to do for that to happen, and we are just at the start of natural health making its way into the mainstream system - there is still a way to go.
'Common sense is not so common' - Dr Phil
Once one comes to understand the common-senseness of how emotions trigger chemical changes in the body*, literally wiring the cells into health or dis-ease, it all makes sense. In fact, if I had a dollar for every client who said to me "Wow, that just makes so much sense, why didn't I see that before?" I'd probably be quite rich.
So why is it we don't know this stuff when it's so obvious once we learn about it? Because we are disconnected from our inner selves, living in our heads, disconnected from our bodies, unaware of what is going on at an emotional / felt-sense level. This is one of the skills all clients must learn: to pay more attention to their feelings, the truth of how they feel in their gut and heart, to tune into their intuition (inner tutor) and authentic selves, to become emotionally savvy.
As self awareness grows, the ability to do damage to oneself through unhealthy lifestyle habits diminishes, allowing the body to self-heal, which it is designed to do. It's not rocket science, but it does require new learning and new awareness.
Once one starts to get in tune with oneself from the inside out, and learns how every cell, tissue and organ have a dual function: physical and meta (beyond) physical, everything starts to become clear.
For example, your digestive system doesn't only have to digest your food - it has to digest your life, in particular, your emotional life.
If you are stressed about things going on in your life, and you are unable to digest those issues, then those emotions are going to get stuck in your tissues... literally. They will fester in your gut as you fail to 'swallow those emotions' or are 'unable to stomach that situation'.
Or what burdens are you carrying around with you that are 'weighing on your shoulders'? Who or what is a 'pain in your neck'? When you find yourself with a rash 'who or what is irritating you'?
Your body responds to every single thing that happens to you in your life. Everything. The question is, are you aware of how it is responding or managing what is going on for you emotionally? Are you monitoring and clearing your emotions, or are you ignoring / suppressing / bottling up / pushing them down... what are you doing with your feelings? Do you know how to identify them / clear them / manage them / transform them?
I can assure you, if you don't manage them, they will build up and turn into deeper feelings of unhappiness, such as anxiety, depression or even dis-ease. It's just how the body-mind works.
So next time you have a symptom, or if you've been diagnosed with an illness (and I mean ANY illness), do yourself a favour and start questioning the root cause of the dis-ease... because I can assure you THERE WILL BE ONE!
It takes great skill at first to identify the missing pieces, which is why unless you've been trained in some specific technique for identifying and clearing the emotions beneath symptoms, you're going to need help.
But with training and perseverance, it's completely possible to becoming emotionally literate and transform your health and wellbeing from the inside out.
